In July, designer Sophia Forero traveled to Haiti with members of the Friends of the Children of Haiti to Croix de Bouquet, the renown metal-art enclave near Port-au-Prince where craftsmen painstakingly transform modest scrap materials -- all that's available-- into stunning sculptures. The result of the journey is this exclusive jewelry collection benefiting FOTCOH and honoring the heritage and spirit of the Haitian people.
"I have always been most interested in using indigenous elements in my pieces," says Forero, a former Peace Corps volunteer whose work is showcased in fashion magazines and sold throughout the U.S. and Europe. "This project lets me create with a whole new idea from Haiti -- using the oil-drum-art pendants."
One hundred percent of the proceeds from each one-of-a-kind necklace will go directly to support FOTCOH in its mission to provide life-sustaining healthcare in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
"This was my first time in a country where truly I could see whispers of chaos," adds Forero. "I came with a totally open mind and heart, and left wanting to go back.
